$6 gas… we need to supercharge our collective ability to achieve energy independence. A fulcrum political issue in 2022.
It’s a common observance: That authoritarian governments protect big business by being dependent on corrosive financial interconnections. Political corruption is a hallmark of Oil. Geopolitical protection of the petroleum industry is multidimensional. One strategy is by dawdling, delaying and disabling alternative energy development. Another is climate science denial.
I know this isn’t an original idea. But I found myself contemplating energy independence. $6 gas might have something to do with it. Generally it’s a happy thought, to think of the world absent the corruption of big oil.
What if all of the fuel communities consume was produced locally?
What if all of the electricity required to operate homes, businesses, equipment and vehicles were produced from locally renewable resources. Like wind, solar, hydro, geo…
What if every community was energy independent? What if many private properties were energy independent?!!
Russia would not be selling fuel. Nor would the Saudi’s. Output would plummet. Costs of products would tumble. The expense of changing the oil in your car would be drastically reduced.
How would this change the dynamic geopolitical puzzle?
I daresay, in the absence of fossil fuel? I think about being held financially hostage. I think about military devotion to protecting supplies. I don’t believe that energy independence will happen soon. And I don’t know that it’s a sure thing. But $6 gas pushes us to imagine independence.
It’s compelling to envision a path for agricultural communities in undeveloped places to skip over coal and petroleum economies by investing and connecting directly to energy independence.
Why community energy independence isn’t happening in China first, is a mystery. Or perhaps it’s begun there. I would like to know. I can also see how authoritarian governance would hesitate to unshackle their population.
Lessening control and promoting independence doesn’t seem to fit with the authoritarian / right wing power grabbing predisposition to dominance. Does it?
Anyway, the best way to fight $6 gas is to invest in alternatives. Politically, we need help to supercharge our collective ability to achieve energy independence. This should be a campaign issue in 2022.
