“Strive to enter through the narrow gate., for many will seek to enter and will not be able.”
Luke 13:2
I’m always amazed by the depth of truth Jesus spoke. In this verse is an affirmation that bible-based community recovery meetings are anointed of God.
How does striving differ from seeking? Doesn’t one describe taking action, while the latter infer simple watching and waiting?
Recovery meetings are often an absent aspect of Church life. Why? Because messy people have messy problems and Churchy people not only design programs to be comfortable, they don’t want to be involved with messy, uncomfortable situations.
Church on Sundays. “Let’s get in, get out and go watch the game.” Small Groups: “I already went to that one.”
There are certain elements that are essential for “Church Life” balance:
- Attending services to receive Exposition from the Pulpit.
- Doctrinal Training (topical studies) commonly provided in small groups
- Applicational Workgroups. Regular meetings with peers.
Workgroups:
“…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling…”
Phil. 2:12
Striving to attain holy objectives is a foundational scriptural truth. It means working, sweating, suffering … and most of all – consistent attendance – in the process of treating our flesh.
“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Phil. 3:14
Why are so many Churches not invested in discipleship through workgroups?
It’s very hard work. It’s the work of making Disciples.
Genuine fellowship in Christ is hard. Idle chit-chat about game scores, fishing and golf is easy.
Which conversation do you have? Mostly?
It’s just a suggestion, but if you’re tired of the idle chit-chat at church? Maybe you belong in a Workgroup getting help with your issues and helping others with theirs.
“that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God….”
2 Cor. 1:4
