Psychoanalysis and the Delusion of Atheism

In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he warns against all kinds of falsehood. Summarizing a range of attributes he concludes this about deceivers:

“…they [have] a form of godliness but deny [His] power.” 2 Tim.3:5

Contemporary Psychiatry says: Faith in God is okay, so long as we don’t actually experience God’s power.

In his article “The Divine Fire of Philip K. Dick” (published online at http://Aeon.co) Kyle Arnold outlines that early psychoanalysis considered faith a pathology of its own that somehow seemed to lead to the “delusion” of divine experience.

“Contemporary systems of psychiatric diagnosis have no problem with a belief in God, Zoroaster, Demeter, or the Moon Goddess. At least in theory, we are free to hold whatever religious beliefs we wish without fear of being labeled mentally ill.

However, the field has made less progress when it comes to actual religious experiences. Patients meet with less tolerance when they reveal that Jesus is speaking to them, right now, in the consulting room, or that the Moon Goddess flew in through their bedroom window last night and initiated a lunar romance. When spirituality makes the leap from an abstract belief to a real, live experience, therapists get nervous.” Kyle Arnold.

We should be aware: It has always been the factual case that an atheistic perspective is self-delusional. 2000 years ago (about 1800 years before the invention of the field of Psychiatry) Paul was writing to the Romans, who were the best educated folks on earth at the time…

“… since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:20-21

God plainly exists. We experience Him in each breath.

Mr. Arnold’s article is worth noting and digesting. At least, we should know that atheistic intellectualism is a formidable foe.  Isn’t it fascinating that Psychiatrists working with the mentally ill would work toward instilling their own denial of God in their patients?

Physician, heal thyself first. Then look to heal your patients.
